Star Trek has always been a franchise rich in adventure, diplomacy, and the unknown depths of space. When Howie Day approached me to compose an original music cue for his short video, Knee Deep in Khitomer, I knew it was an opportunity to pay homage to the legendary musical traditions of the series while crafting something unique to the moment.
Setting the Scene: The USS Titan Over Khitomer
The scene in Knee Deep in Khitomer features the USS Titan emerging from warp over the neutral treaty world of Khitomer. This planet, significant in the histories of both the Federation and the Klingon Empire, serves as the setting for delicate negotiations. The Titan’s crew is tasked with moderating these talks, but as the situation unfolds, tensions rise, and an ominous presence looms.
Musical Approach: Honoring Tradition, Building Suspense
To capture the essence of this moment, I structured the music in two distinct movements, each reflecting the shifting dynamics of the scene:
🎼 A Noble and Adventurous Beginning – The cue opens with a bold and inspiring melody, echoing the hopeful spirit of Starfleet and the Federation’s commitment to diplomacy. Drawing inspiration from classic Star Trek motifs, the piece establishes a sense of grandeur and optimism as the Titan arrives in the Khitomer system.
🔥 Tension Rises with the Klingon Arrival – As Klingon Birds of Prey appear, the music takes a darker turn. The harmonies shift, the orchestration thickens, and a sense of foreboding settles in. The cues grow more intense, building suspense as the Titan is escorted into orbit under the watchful eyes of the Klingon fleet. The musical shift mirrors the rising conflict, signaling that these negotiations may not go as planned.
Balancing Diplomacy and Danger
One of the most compelling aspects of Star Trek is its ability to balance diplomacy with high-stakes tension. This score aimed to reflect that duality—starting with an air of diplomatic optimism before subtly unraveling into uncertainty and impending conflict.
Final Thoughts
Composing for Knee Deep in Khitomer was an incredible experience, allowing me to contribute to the vast musical legacy of Star Trek in my own way. The interplay between adventure, diplomacy, and looming conflict made for an exciting challenge, and I couldn’t be happier with how the cue turned out.
