Music Cue Spotlight: The World After

Mood/Feel: Horror/Post-Apocalyptic

Mood/Feel: Dark/Horror

We begin with two eight note hits on the Japanese Taiko drum, then a syncopated synth doles out our main melodic motif. This is repeated three more times, until a tail is added on the last repetition. After that, three distinct stick hits plunge us into the next section as a distorted synth one octave up mirrors our motif. Behind all of this we hear the sound a moving air, and the distant screech of metal. This gives the cue a post-apocalyptic and desolated feel. After every repetition of the motif, we hear the reverberating sticks. In the middle of each phrase, we hear a low, tolling metallic impact, almost as if a sledgehammer is pounding a hollow metallica casing.

Soon the motif launches into full motion, as the cue takes off. More instruments are added, and the our melody is fully fleshed out, adding an ambient snare to keep time. Added to it are triplet taiko drums at the end of each phrase, adding to the cue a somewhat tribal feel. Halfway through this section strings are added, giving the motif a sadness to accompany its dread. Our melody soldiers on, until finally we reach a fork in the road.

A new motif is added, this one suggesting some added drama. The melody is delivered using the same syncopated synth from the beginning, but this time a single, ambient piano accompanies it. Our heavy metal impact continues, with the triplet drums continuing to give the cue size, weight and menace while the ambient stick hits remind us of impending doom. Tremolo strings mirror the piano keys, adding more drama. More strings join the fray, syncopating the same notes as the new motif. One half of the string section separates from the pack at the end of each phrase to play a descending tail leading into the next measure.
