Music Cue Spotlight: Forever Forward

Updated: Jun 9, 2018

Mood/Feel: Inspirational

Theme: We all have goals and aspirations. We dream about them as we lie awake at night, day dream about them at work, and we get close enough to touch them every now and again. But sooner or later we take a quick hook to the chin, and before you know it we experience the familiar taste of dirt. It is during these times, when we are at our lowest, that we must remind ourselves to move forever forward. That the only way through our problems, is forward, straight at them. The only way through pain, is to experience it. We must remember that what we seek is just on the other side of our worst trials and tribulations.

This cue begins with a timpani hit, coupled with an ostinato on both piano as well as strings, creating an aspirational tone. Our melody is played over top of this lush foundation with keys in the mid-range, the reflection of which lays underneath with a group of voices. As if in response, the melody is repeated on the piano, this time one octave higher. Each new phrase is announced with two quarter note hits on our set of timpani drums. All-the-while our lush foundation churns underneath, until finally all come together as one to change our key.

Now that we are in our new key, the ostinato continues, but this time a new, descending melody is introduced, which the ostinato follows. Underneath a cello mourns out its own descending line, though this one differs from the melody. Following this, our horn section starts to crescendo into the mix, playing rich, brassy descending chords of their own. Our french horn resolves the chord as a reverse cymbal launches us into the next section.

We find ourselves in a much bigger, richer and bassy ostinato in the style of Hans Zimmer, with each repetition punctuated by pulsating taiko drums as well as clicking sticks drenched in reverb and dotted sixteenth delay, à la Batman Begins. Above this epic drive, our horns bellow out a new, regal melody, which the returning piano accompanies. Not long after, the piano forges its own path, with a brand new counter melody suggestive of reflection and closure. The cue builds and builds, the drums thundering out triplet fills at the end of each phrase driving us closer and closer to oblivion, until suddenly we are left only with the piano counter melody, which seems to sum up the piece as a whole.

This was a very fun cue to write. When it was originally conceived I had no idea it would end up being the epic, inspirational cue that it became, but therein lies the beauty and fun of music, and creativity in general. When I reflect on the creation of this piece, I am reminded of serendipity's place in creation, and that chance and happenstance are just as important and integral as sound music theory.
