For over a century, Tarzan has captivated audiences worldwide as the legendary jungle hero created by Edgar Rice Burroughs. His story—one of survival, adventure, and identity—has been told through novels, films, and television series, each adaptation bringing a unique perspective to his character. As a composer deeply inspired by cinematic storytelling, I took on the challenge of crafting an original orchestral theme that embodies the essence of Tarzan: the untamed warrior, the noble protector, and the man caught between two worlds.
Capturing the Spirit of the Jungle
When composing this theme, my goal was to evoke the rich atmosphere of Tarzan’s world: the vast, untamed jungle teeming with life, the rhythmic pulse of nature, and the primal energy that fuels his every move. To achieve this, I incorporated:
🎼 Sweeping Melodies: The melody had to be both heroic and deeply emotional, reflecting Tarzan’s inner conflict and his fierce sense of loyalty to both the jungle and the people he protects.
🥁 Tribal Percussion: The jungle is alive with rhythm, and I wanted the score to mirror that. Powerful drum patterns and organic percussion create a driving force behind the orchestration, grounding the music in a raw, primal energy.
🎻 Cinematic Orchestration: Tarzan is an epic character, so his theme had to match his grandeur. Strings, brass, and woodwinds work together to paint a sonic picture of his dynamic life—from breathtaking swings through the trees to intense battles against those who threaten his home.
Balancing the Wild and the Noble
Tarzan is not just a savage warrior; he is also an intelligent, compassionate protector. This duality shaped my approach to the composition. The theme shifts between moments of raw power—highlighted by driving percussion and brass—and moments of introspection, where softer strings and woodwinds bring out his human side. This balance reflects his journey of self-discovery, torn between his animal instincts and the echoes of his human heritage.
Why Tarzan?
I’ve always been fascinated by characters who exist between worlds, and Tarzan is the perfect example of this dynamic. His story is timeless, touching on themes of identity, belonging, and the clash between civilization and the wild. Musically, this provided a vast playground of ideas to explore, from African-inspired rhythms to classic Hollywood adventure scoring.
