As you may remember, I was recently hired by Teresa Clarke and her husband Allen to write and record an original intro for their true-crime podcast, "the Clarke After Dark Podcast". The program focuses on real-life marital crime stories, so the program has both a dark, and paradoxically, a light-hearted vibe to it. As a result, they knew they were looking for a tone that was dark, mysterious, and a little bit of fun, but other than that they had no particular examples for me to go on. My winning pitch was: If I were to compose this, it would sound like Satan has a lounge band that's trying to lure you into hell instead of scaring you away.
I knew I wanted the band to be drums, guitar, piano, strings and horns, and I wanted to keep it simple. I was confident I could handle programming the drums, piano, strings and horns, but for the guitar I wanted to bring my older brother Larry on-board. What he delivered was tasteful and perfect. Whenever I get a chance to bring my brother in on a project I really try to make it happen. He's a wonderful musician and it's a great excuse for us to spend some time together. I'm certain the Clarke's are glad I brought him into the fold as well!
